County Committees: Grants & Labor/Management

If this is your first communication from me, Welcome, if not, Welcome back! This is the third installment about the St. Clair County committees, where the business of the county occurs. You can read the prior installments on my website: Animal Services & Economic Development, Environment, and Finance.

Grants Committee

The Grants Committee reviews all proposals submitted by the Intergovernmental Grants Department prior to the submission on funding.

The Grants Committee is one of the standing committees of the County, however, it and the Intergovernmental Grants Department is scarcely mentioned in the County Code. The Intergovernmental Grants Director is appointed by the County Board Chairman "with the advice and consent" of the County Board for a term of two years.

The Intergovernmental Grants Department webpage has more information about the services they offer the community: Community Development, Community Services, and Workforce Development. For the most part, it appears the Intergovernmental Grants Department is the County's point of contact for identifying federal and state grants to local governments and identifying eligible entities within St. Clair County to receive those funds.

Labor Management Committee

The Committee is responsible for: Negotiating with bargaining units representing employees of St. Clair County. Negotiating, reviewing and solving any differences that may arise between labor and management. Any other labor/management related duties as may arise as requested by the Chairman of the County Board or the County Board.

The Labor Management Committee is also one of the standing committees of the county. Like the Grants Committee above, it also does not have much description in the County Code beyond what you see above: this committee represents the County --and therefore the residents-- in labor negotiations with public unions. This representation in bargaining is important because salaries, obligations and more are at stake.

That's all for this week! I hope to meet as many of the voters in District 2 before election day so I can be prepared to represent you effectively on the County Board and within whichever committee I am assigned.
